Kara,
You will need a second stair in each of your two structures unless you can introduce a connection on the second floor. But other than that I hope th efirst thing you will try to figure out for yourself is the reason for th espace between the buildigs containing the water feature. Is it an indoor or outdoor space? Is it open to the public, if yes, open all the time, accessible after passing a guard? What is th eprogram in this space, active water treatment, learning feature, area for contemplation/recreation for students and staff? et cetera. does the treatment of theis inner space affect the edge treatment for the rest of the project, Boylston Street side, Highway side, neigboring building, corner of Mass Ave? How does this space tie into your idea for building services?
Now study the plans including site plan.
